Chicken Steamed with Chinese Herbs (Herbal Chicken)
This is a quick and easy traditional steamed chicken dish to prepare. The Chinese herbs are commonly used in traditional Chinese cooking.
This dish is SO EASY LAH! Just prepare the herbs infused stock, then steam the chicken with it and dinner is ready. The recipe shown here feeds 1, just double up accordingly if you are cooking for more.
This is a nice and nutritious dish to go with a bowl of hot rice!

Prep time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes (10 + 20 minutes)
Serving: 1 (increase portions accordingly if you are cooking for more)
Ingredients:
- 200ml water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (1/4 teaspoon + 1/4 teaspoon)
- 1/4 teaspoon chicken stock granules
- 1 tablespoon Shao Xing wine
- 3 red dates (Jujube)
- 1 teaspoon (5g) Goji berries / Wolfberries
- 5g Yu Zhu (Solomon's Seal)
- 2 pieces Dang Gui (Angelica's Root)
- 1 chicken whole leg
Method:
- Rub 1/4 teaspoon of salt all over the chicken leg and set aside to marinate for at least an hour
- To prepare the Chinese herb stock:
- Heat up water over MEDIUM LOW heat
- Add red dates (jujube), Yu Zhu (Solomon's Seal), Dang Gui (Angelica's Root), salt (1/4 teaspoon) and chicken stock granules
- Simmer over MEDIUM LOW heat for 10 minutes. Stir occasionally.
- Taste and flavor to your liking. Set aside for later.
- Place the marinated chicken leg on a steaming plate and pour the herb stock over it. Add Shao Xing wine and sprinkle Goji berries onto the chicken leg. Then it's ready to be steamed.
- Cooking time:
- Panasonic Cubie: Steam setting, MEDIUM, 30 minutes
- Stove top: Bring water to boil in a pot and place a trivet / steamer rack in it. Steam chicken leg over MEDIUM HIGH HEAT for 20 minutes.
- Serve immediately with steaming hot white rice
Notes:
- There are many versions of Chinese Herbal Chicken. This is a recipe which is easy to prepare using easily available herbs.
- You can add in a bottle of Brand's Chicken Essence to make another version of steamed Herbal Chicken
- Dang Gui is strong in flavor. If you like it, you may add more for a stronger flavor. If you don't like it, you may reduce the amount or omit it from the recipe.
