Steamed Jasmine White Rice (How To Cook Rice Without A Rice Cooker - Asian Method) White rice is a staple food in our Asian diet. Piping hot white rice goes well with a main protein dish and some veggies side dishes, and leftover rice can be kept overnight to be made it into fried rice the next day.

But how to cook rice if ... ... you need to cook rice without a rice cooker ... ... there is an electricity cut and you can't use your rice cooker ... ... you need to cook a small portion of rice ... SO EASY LAH! Steaming is a fast and easy way to cook rice. Turns out perfect most of the time. The recipe shown here feeds 1 to 2, just double up accordingly if you are cooking for more.

Cooking time: 15 minutes
Serving: 1 to 2 (increase portions accordingly if you are cooking for more)

Ingredients:

  • 120g (1/2 cup) Jasmine rice
  • 125ml (1/2 cup) water
    Add more water for softer rice 1-2 tablespoons (15 to 30ml)

Method:

  • Rinse rice to wash off dirt and impurities. Drain and repeat.
  • Add water to rice before steaming
    Rice to water ratio:
    1 cup rice : 1 cup water
    1 : 1

    However if you like softer rice like me, add another 1-2 tablespoons (15 to 30ml) of water
  • Bring water to boil in a pot and place a trivet / steamer rack in it. Steam the Jasmine rice over MEDIUM HIGH HEAT for 15 minutes.
  • The rice is ready when all the water have been absorbed and the surface of the rice is no longer wet and glistening. Turn off heat and let the bowl of rice sit in the pot for a minute or two before serving. 
Notes:
  • Jasmine rice to water ratio is usually 1:1
  • Just add a little bit more water and adjust the amount to get the rice texture you like
